Reading for Success is a community sharing initiative that promotes reading in struggling K-8 schools. Twice a semester, PCF donates 1,000 books to an elementary school with the lowest PSSA reading test scores in the school district. We present the books at an all-school assembly, along with a presentation by a community leader about the importance of reading. The goal of this program is to replenish the city’s undersupplied school libraries and classrooms, while promoting the importance of reading.
Career Clubs are monthly meetings that prepare high school students for postsecondary education and career development. The meetings are facilitated by career guidance professionals and admissions representatives from local colleges, universities, and technical/trade schools. Topics include college applications, financial aid, choosing a major, top ten careers, resume/cover letter writing, interviewing skills, networking, and professionalism. The goals are to motivate students to graduate high school on time, and to prepare them for a positive future in higher education, job training, and/or the workforce. 2011-2012 participants: Overbrook High School, Germantown High School, Frankford High School, John Bartram High School, Thomas Edison High School.
Worklace Tours are held at the conclusion of Career Clubs. Participating students are taken on a full day of tours to workplaces in the Greater Philadelphia area. Computers in Hand is a recycling initiative that promotes home computer access. We collect donated computers, refurbish them for student use, and donate them to local K-12 students in need of a home computer. We encourage parents, teachers, and school administrators to nominate student candidates for this program. To be eligible for a free computer, the child must be 6 to 18 years of age, and enrolled in a Philadelphia area school. To access the application form, visit www.philly-connect.org and click on the Computer Application tab.
Resource Fairs are held throughout Philadelphia to connect area residents to community organizations and opportunities in their neighborhood. The fair includes free activities for young people, entertainment, food, raffles, music, and community unity.
Philly-connect.org is PCF’s resource website, which connects residents to thousands of educational, career and enrichment resources. It is designed for easy navigation with components for students, parents, special needs families, teachers, service providers, and mentors. The goal of this website is to equip Philadelphia’s families with information and resources to build better lives. PCF extends this service to residents without internet access through Resources in Hand, whereby we provide local offices of State Representatives and Senators with brochure racks containing materials from over 30 organizations that best serve the constituents in each district.

College & Vo-Tech School Tours
College & Vo-Tech School Tours will take 10th to 12th graders on tours of colleges, universities, two year community colleges, and technical/trade schools in the Philadelphia area. PCF will take up to 40 students on a tour every month. Each tour will consist of a morning visit to a college or university campus, followed by an afternoon visit to a vocational or technical school. Students will learn about the programs offered at each school, as well as the application procedures and admissions requirements. In addition to the tours, PCF will host a college fair in every participating high school. The goals are to inform high school students about postsecondary education, and to provide options that cater to the academic, personal and financial needs of every student.
Career Bus
Career Bus will be a multi-media mobile learning center for elementary school students. Aboard the Career Bus, students will have access to child-friendly career games, videos, books, and audio books about a variety of occupations and industries. The bus will operate all year around and travel to locations throughout Philadelphia such as schools, day camps, recreation centers, and playgrounds to serve children citywide. The goal of this program is to expose children to careers, and inspire life goals at a young age.
Career Coloring Books
Career Coloring Books will be produced and distributed for elementary school students. The coloring books will highlight occupations in different industries and foster potential career goals in young learners.
